How to Choose the Right Grinder for Your Work
Grinders are among the most versatile and widely used power tools across industries ranging from metal fabrication and construction to stone masonry and automotive repair. However, choosing the wrong grinder for your application can lead to poor results, premature tool wear, and safety hazards.
Angle grinders are the workhorses of the grinder family. Available in disc sizes from 100mm to 230mm, they handle cutting, grinding, polishing, and sanding across metal, concrete, tile, and stone. For most contractors, a 115mm or 125mm angle grinder covers the majority of tasks, while larger 230mm models are suited for heavy cutting in structural steel or masonry.
Bench grinders are fixed tools designed for precision sharpening and shaping. They are ideal for sharpening chisels, drill bits, and lathe tools, as well as deburring metal workpieces. When selecting a bench grinder, consider wheel diameter, RPM rating, and motor power relative to the hardness of materials you will be working with.
Die grinders are compact, high-speed rotary tools used for detailed grinding, carving, and polishing in confined spaces. They are popular in automotive bodywork, mould making, and fine metalwork. Pneumatic die grinders offer higher sustained power for continuous use, while electric models provide the convenience of plug-in operation.
Always match the grinding disc or wheel to the material and the rated RPM of your grinder. Using a disc rated below your tool's maximum RPM is extremely dangerous. Invest in quality discs with proper safety ratings — the cost is negligible compared to the cost of an injury or a ruined workpiece.
