Top Maintenance Tips to Extend Tool Lifespan
Investing in quality power tools is only half the equation — keeping them in peak condition is what separates tools that last a decade from those that fail within months. At Global Power Tools, we've compiled the most impactful maintenance habits from our 30+ years of experience in the industry.
The simplest and most overlooked habit is cleaning your tools after every use. Dust, wood chips, metal shavings, and moisture are the primary enemies of precision machinery. Use a soft brush or compressed air to clear ventilation slots, and wipe external surfaces with a dry cloth. Never use water directly on power tools.
Lubrication is critical for moving parts such as chucks, gears, and saw blades. Apply the manufacturer-recommended lubricant at the specified intervals. Over-lubrication is just as harmful as under-lubrication — follow the maintenance schedule in your tool's user manual.
For cordless tools, battery care is paramount. Avoid fully discharging lithium-ion batteries; instead, charge them when they reach 20–30% capacity. Store batteries at room temperature and never leave them on the charger indefinitely. A well-maintained battery can last three to five years before replacement is needed.
Inspect all fasteners, guards, and safety mechanisms before each use. Replace worn blades, discs, or bits promptly — a dull cutting edge forces the motor to work harder, accelerating wear. Check power cables and plugs on corded tools for fraying, cracks, or loose connections.
When in doubt, bring your tools to a certified Global Power Tools service centre. Our trained technicians carry out full diagnostics, bearing replacements, and calibration to restore your tools to factory specification. Preventative servicing twice a year can significantly reduce the total cost of ownership.
